Once in a while you might get that feeling like maybe there are a few things about Jade we just don’t know yet, or that there are pieces of her background that explain more about what we do think we know. Here we have an author who uses their one-shot to dive into this unknown a little bit, and as a result they are able to paint a descriptive picture of what Jade’s life could look like if more was shared. This certainly adds to the reader’s ability to become enveloped in her character as she pursues her passions and pines after Tori while their relationship builds and they become closer. Longer than the average one-shot, but arguably worth the time commitment, this story should have you hooked with little effort as long as you don’t mind some drama here and there with some possible inconsistencies.

Also, for those who are Enrique Iglesias fans, a small nod to the song Hero is made in this story.

Although it uses a familiar formula of having the crushing of Bade open up the love channel for Jori, the fact that Tori is secure in her sexuality is a refreshing character trait in this story that is not common of most others. If you’re amused by Tori’s self-pity and shameless creeperness of the hide-in-bushes variety, then I guarantee you will be humored by her antics while reading. There’s also some Tori/Andre friendship for those who appreciate it.

The best way I can think of to describe how the experience of reading this one-shot was for me is to say it’s like feeling nostalgia for something that hasn’t actually happened yet. Its focus on the transition that inevitably comes for everyone between the end of their K-12 education and entering the real world opens up so many emotions at once, for both the characters and the reader. Perhaps what gives it the most appeal is how realistic the situation comes off. Continuing their game through high school would be so easy, but once it comes time to part ways, Jade and Tori couldn’t cope without letting some mutual honesty leak out so they stay connected somehow. This story simply captures everything spot on, and it’s beautifully written. Don’t let yourself miss out on reading this Jori gem.
